Here’s our list of activist organizations working in the Kansas City area.

American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas & Western Missouri – The mission of the ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri is to protect and defend the Constitutional rights and civil liberties of every individual in Kansas and Western Missouri regardless of creed, race, religion or other labeling through education, advocacy, and litigation. www.aclukswmo.org

American Friends Services Committee, Kansas City Chapter – We know that peacemaking requires more than merely advocating against one war or another. Rather, we need to change the culture, situations, and systems that lead to violence. www.afsc.org/office/kansas-city-mo

Bridging The Gap – Bridging The Gap works to make the Kansas City region sustainable by connecting environment, economy and community. We educate citizens, businesses and governments about the impact their decisions have on our environment. www.bridgingthegap.org

Community of Reason KC – We sponsor a weekly program of presentation and discussion from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday at the University of Missouri – Kansas City in Haag Hall, Room 301. Past programs have included lectures on Green Technology and Policies, The Schofield Bible, Evolutionary Biology, Global Climate Change among others. www.communityofreasonkc.org

Communities Creating Opportunity – CCO believes every citizen, given the proper training, motivation and support can take extraordinary steps to improve the quality of life for their communities. www.cco.org

Connecting For Good – Our organization has a plan to ensure that all citizens can access broadband Internet, regardless of their incomes. While Internet access is available at libraries, schools and other public institutions, we believe connectivity in the home is essential for all Kansas City families if they are to fully participate in our digital society. Connecting for Good, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) a nonprofit organization that is bridging the Digital Divide. www.connectingforgood.org

EQUAL (Empowering Queer Activists and Leaders) – We are the local Kansas City Metro Area Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Network. We work with GLSEN of Greater Kansas City. GLSEN is the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. (www.glsen.org/kansascity) As EQUAL, we provide social justice training for promising LGBTQ youth leaders. We also seek to spread awareness for LGBTQIA issues as well as gender issues. The main event that we do is the EQUAL Empowerment Summit which was February 21, 2013. Films For Action Kansas City Chapter – Our City Chapters are working to create alternative media channels that will inform, connect, and inspire action at a community level. www.filmsforaction.org/KC/events

Free Network Foundation -The Free Network Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides operators around the world with essential infrastructure for the realization and support of free networks. We engineer tools and develop educational resources to facilitate the deployment of resilient, responsive, and accessible networks. www.thefnf.org

Friends of Community Media – Friends of Community Media is a non-profit corporation serving the Kansas City area devoted to citizen participation in the media. FCM encourages media to be responsive to the community and promotes diverse racial, ethnic, gender, and minority group participation in all media. www.ourfcm.org

Food Not Lawns – Our goals are to help increase local food security, improve your diet, beautify your surroundings, reduce pollution and energy use. www.foodnotlawnskc.org

Ida B. Wells Coalition Against Racism and Police Brutality in Kansas City – This group formed in Kansas City as a result of anti-racist training conducted by Lorenzo and JoNina Ervin in KC on April 27th & 28th, 2013. Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) Kansas City Chapter
– The IWW is a member-run union for all workers, a union dedicated to organizing on the job, in our industries and in our communities. www.kciww.org

Kansas City Atheist Coalition – The Kansas City Atheist Coalition is a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization. Our mission is to advance atheism through activism, philanthropy, education and the cultivation of a positive secular community. www.kcatheists.org

Kansas City Freethinkers of Color – Communities of color have strong ties to religion. It’s cultural, which makes being a freethinker of color extremely difficult. Regardless of where you’re at in your journey, there are friends waiting to help you. You’re not alone. The purpose of this is not to separate us from other freethinkers. It’s to change the perception that being a person of color (POC) automatically means you believe in the supernatural. It’s to provide support. We can and do lead positive, fulfilling lives without a higher power. Kansas/Missouri DREAM Alliance – Our mission is to serve our communities by advocating higher education for immigrant and minority youth regardless of citizenship status. We work on improving access to higher education and creating equal opportunity by educating, engaging, and inspiring immigrant youth in Kansas and Missouri. KC Move to Amend – We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United and other related cases, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights. www.movetoamend.org/mo-kansas-city

Troost Village – The Troost Village Community Association is the result of the evolution of a Race Relations Action Team formed during the KC Forums project in mid 2004, and the work of individuals and groups who live and work near the intersection of Troost Avenue and 31st St in Kansas City, Missouri. www.creativeprocess.net/troostvillage
